Maybe also because it's jarring to our sensibilities whereas for
works of Dosoevsky it's pretty common. I'm currently reading The
Brothers Karamazov and I can see exactly what you mean and I can see
how it wouldn't come off quite the same in a contemporary novel what
with all the other influences from Joyce to ... well .... Pynchon.
