I believe it is a reference to Malcolm X.  During his teen years, he was a
restroom attendant at the Roseland  Ballroom.  He became friends with a lot
of musicians while working there.  I highly recommend reading "The
Autobiography of Malcolm X".  It is one of the best books I have read.
