hmm, I'll make a mental note to try that...

as to AA in IJ, the part I sorta related to was when the PGOAT had
this moment of horror at the bad grammar used by the speakers at the
AA meeting  ("I'm reduced through my addiction to the state where my
hope of cure is expressed so poorly") - so that - when she expresses
this disdain - to Gately who is trying to shepherd/mentor her through
starting to get sober, poor Don Gately's face muscles start drooping
because he has nothing to counter this with; but he's able by
empathizing with the speaker to keep himself with the program.
The PGOAT's horror relates to the League of Militant Grammarians and
the Map-territory distinction that are recurring themes/characters,
too
I think AA's valid and I know some people it's helped.  I'm sure it's
not perfect - what in this world is?
