There's an Irish pub near my home called James' Gate. I like to go there
around 4 in the afternoon for what I call "contractors' happy hour" when you
have literally step over power saws on the floor to get to the restroom.
The owner of the pub recently paid part of the costs to publish a book
called "Poems by Carpenters" consisting mostly of the poetry of his
afternoon clientele. It doesn't suck. Many of the contributors are FBI
(foreign born Irish) and carry on the working class literary tradition of
their former home. I like hanging out in an environment where people who are
a little bit sweaty and even caked with mortor or paint can play chess by
the fire and discuss literature.
There's a bit of a movement in Boston now for alternative places to show
art. Some of my visual artist friends are bypassing the traditional gallery
spaces and hanging their stuff in bars. They sell a lot more that way and
avoid the fees.
