Yeah, I think navel-gazing is a good way to phrase it.
I found a couple stories in one issue of Open City from around four or
five years ago that I liked, but they were generally not about
anything, just had some amusing moments, and I liked some stories from
the issue of McSweeney's with an amputee Bush on the cover OK, but
I've also read Granta, Tin House, Glimmer Train, Boulevard, XConnect,
Salt Hill, and I'm sure a few others (though pretty much one issue of
each) and the only thing that stood out was a photo-journalism bit on
Sierra Leone in Granta... which was interesting and had some great
photos, but I'm not spending $10-$15 on a literature periodical to
look at photos, now am I?
