Yes, Vaucanson actually built a duck that could excrete feces, and it was
a marvel of the day, just like the recent invention of the sandwich and
the presentations by the hypnotist Mesmer. Doesn't the duck also make an
appearance in Norfolk's "Lempriere's Dictionary" (which I still need to
read)?
