I think your comments below are right on, but that's not necesarily a
good thing.  What's interesting to note is that Pynchon can write
exsquisite description of scenes in great levels of detail, but very
rarely does he do so with his characters.  I think one of the least
flat of his characters was Blicero, and possibly Enzian.
