Excellent!
In China, and other countries that use Chinese
characters for writing, it's common to have one's name
(usually two characters) carved into a soapstone
cylinder, and use this "seal" or "chop" (as it's also
known) to sign documents or otherwise leave a formal
mark or signature.

This may indeed be the Biblical "against the day" that
Pynchon has in mind. Ephesians has a passage about
donning one spiritual armor to do battle with the
Devil, too, if I'm remembering correctly, that has
become a mainstay for "spiritual warfare"
fundamentalists.
