Can Pynchon write (yet)?

Paul, what do you mean when you say "his characters are a running commentary
on
the process of writing characters?"  Is there an example from GR you could
point me to?  I ask because Pirate having to 'insert' himself into the
narrative isn't, to me, so much an authorial comment, but just a different
way of plopping characters into novels.  Some authors ignore the
artificiality of their writing and others don't, but I don't see how NOT
ignoring that artifice automatically constitutes a comment on the writing
process.

I'm really interested in this question, though, so I look forward to yr
thoughts.
