You are not alone in liking Vineland a lot, I do, too.
The close reading and annotation we gave it here on
Pynchon-l lo these many years ago demonstrated, for my
money, that sentence for sentence and paragraph for
paragraph the writing's Pynchon, hot and fun to read,
and in the bigger scheme it's of a piece with the rest
of his novels - I expect that Against the Day may help
to pull Vineland a bit more tightly into the fold,
with diction closer to that of GR than M&D perhaps
serving to "normalize" the jagged pop culture edge
that offends some, in Vineland. I like the subject
matter as well, having spent a season of my own with
the harvest and then house-sitting in the last house
on Salmon Road a couple of miles out of Garberville)
while my friends went on vacation. New Year's Eve is
quite a party in downtown Garberville, it was in
1979. Good parties over in a place called Whale Gulch,
too, if I'm remembering correctly, a bit of a green
blur at times, nothing serious....
