Transit of Mercury tomorrow (Wednesday Nov 8th) from 11:12 to 4:09 PST
-- find someone with a telescope, not as cool as transits of Venus (next
one 2012) but the Transits of Mercury occur once every ten years or so,
and are the only time Mercury is visible from Earth. Transits of Mercury
were, historically when the distance from the Earth to the Sun were
calculated.

“Gentlemen,” advises this ominous Shadow, “— you have fallen,
willy-nilly, among a race who not only devour Astronomers as a matter of
habitual Diet, but may also make of them vile minature ‘Sandwiches,’ and
then lay them upon a mahogany Sideboard whose Price they never knew, and
/then forget/ to eat them. Your only hope, in this room, is to
impersonate so perfectly what they assume you to be, that instincts of
Predation will be overcome by those of Boredom.” -- Mason&Dixon
