Translators contacting P.

Seems to be quite a norm. Here is what one of the French translators of M&D, 
Brice Matthieussent (the other being Christophe Claro) says:

Amazon.fr: While working on the translation, did you have the necessity of 
author's explanations?

B. Matthieussent: I contacted Thomas Pynchon by fax. I asked him questions 
as there was an enormous amount of things I didn't understand. [...] I spent 
three hours on two lines, for example, trying to decipher the technique of 
assembling the planks of a boat. In such cases I looked on the Internet or 
asked Pynchon to specify a thing or two.


Amazon.fr: Pendant votre travail de traduction, avez-vous eu besoin des 
éclairages de l'auteur ?

B. Matthieussent: J'étais en contact avec Thomas Pynchon par fax. Je lui 
posais des questions, parce qu'il y avait énormément de choses que je ne 
comprenais pas. [...] J'ai passé trois heures sur deux lignes par exemple, à 
essayer de déchiffrer la technique d'assemblage des planches de bateau. Dans 
ces cas-là, j'allais sur Internet ou je demandais à Pynchon de me préciser 
deux ou trois choses.
