Bianca, Pokler's incest fantasy, the human hair on the
doll of the girl who won't last long in the Zone if
she's not already a ghost: the alluring dis-ease of
reading Pynchon at his best, imo, the scab you can't
avoid lifting even as you swear you won't don't it
again, these moments 't come just frequently enough to
remind (me) that the world is a terribly scary and
violent place BUT safe in here we're having fun
playing with those ideas and images and impulses and
anxieties, here and now in the privacy of our intimate
reading and Pynchon's writing, because that's part of
what makes it even more dislocating, for me, knowing
that Pynchon is playing, he knows what the reader is
feeling here, in a general way at least and in the
case of an American Male reader born in the 20th
century he's got our number down to the last
porned-out pixel. Soon enough he's off into something
funny or weird or mindless enough again, and without
the dark moments it would be, to borrow a phrase,
mindless pleasures indeed.

You want obscene: the Gold Star Mom salivating over
her Gold Star. That's Pynchon nailing his parents'
generation in a rage you had to live through the 60s
to understand, I suspect.
