The mistaken interchangeability of intellectual and academic is fundamental problem, for both academics and non-academics, i.e. the general public, alike.
For example, I consider myself to be, for better or worse, an auto-didact, i.e. non-academic, intellectual. Yes, there is anti-illectualism, but some it is misplaced anti-academicism.... :-)
Sure, Pynchon is an intellectual, but I don't think that he's a genuine academic.
