By the way, did everyone catch the reference to Pynchon devotees in Menand's review of AtD? Something about Pynchon-describes-sexual-practices-that-are-more-fun-to-read-about-than-it-would-be-for-Pynchon-diehards-to-engage-in. Or something like that. I'm paraphrasing, because, frankly, I'm too lazy to look it up. Like Pynchon, I misspent a part of my youth as an enlistee in the Navy (orgies and/or hookers, etc.). One of the great sources of my affinity with Pynchon is his Naval service, and the stereotypes, I'm happy to say, are still generally true (or were as of 2002 anyway). Menand seems like a good-enough-looking dude, but how old is he now--in his sixties or something? Is this really the type of joke he should be telling?
