It's gotta be Sir Ranulph Fiennes... the guy cut off his own frostbitten
fingers with an electric saw, for chrissakes. And he was discharged from
the SAS for blowing up part of the Dr Doolittle set that he took a
disliking too. Sweet.

On the AtD wiki, I just saw a photo of the Norwegian explorer Fridtjof
Nansen. Does he make a cameo in AtD or something? I certainly hope so.
Like a lot of readers drawn to Pynchon, I share his fascination with
explorers, both fictional and actual, and so I don't think it's at all
inappropriate to this discussion to ask everyone who their favorite
(real-life) explorers are. I'm a Richard Byrd man myself.
