Does it seem like Pynchon is cribbing a bit from Vollman's Bright and Risen Angels? All the stuff about electricity and corporate greed/nefariousness (on a massive scale), and the ice palaces of the arctic, the recruitment of young men early in their lives to serve the corporation. The implied war between nature and electricity. All of this probably has a common source in "real" history, but at times the similarities are striking.
