I meant to also mention in my last post that in order to get a better sense of the novel's intentions and scope, to better understand its terrain, I've been reading all of the reviews I can (by critics I respect, that is). What some call spoilers I call enhancers--thorough and intelligent reviews, to me, _enhance_ the reading experience, even if they sometimes do give away who killed who with a candlestick in the attic. If I were working with a better piece of hardware upstairs, maybe I could go into a novel of this size and complexity cold and understand it just fine. But that's not the case, in my experience, and I've found this standing policy of mine helpful with Pynchon and other authors engaged in a similar endevour.
