Thought the Daily Show essay was fine, pretty clever, but a little on the hagiographic side. Am currently reading a decidedly _non_-shitty essay by a great writer, DeLillo's "Three Movies, a Book, and an Old Photograph," from Grand Street 73. Was able to latch onto a copy from Amazon; would recommend all to do the same.
