Jasper's right, and I laughed out loud at that 'Disgusted of Tunbridge
Wells' reference.

Yeah, and a good example of Pynchon (presumably deliberately) using an
incongrously American word to describe a British location, another
example which always struck me being 'loops of an underpass' in the
opening sequence of GR, although maybe I'm wrong about that one.  But
nobody English would unironically refer to the town centre of Tunbridge
Wells as 'downtown'.
