A few years before M&D came out, I did my first drive E to W across
Pennsylvania on I-80, and had a flash of how infinitely bounteous it must
have looked to settlers cresting the Appalachian ridges, one green NE-to-SW
valley after another, some kind of stream watering the bottomland of almost
every one. All they'd need to contest was whose homestead would be nearest a
notch or gap, to haul that whiskey (or drive those preterite pigs).
