<<Yes, been having that same feeling too... not to mention all the annoying
'and so forths' and 'after alls' (see especially the final lines on pages
106 and 137)...

How could a man who must have a sharper understanding than most about the
importance of posterity have let it happen?>>

Eh? Both those passages are beautiful, early examples of prime Pynchon,
brilliant incarnations of his habit of finishing chapters or sections with a
bravura flourish. Can't be sure of course, but the fact that they both end
with '..., after all,...' is, I would guess, deliberate.

<<After page 200 I have a very unpleasant feeling that the editing was done
in

a hurry, (maybe in order to present the book for the National Book Award in
time, don't know) therefore some stylistic lapses are a letdown, (e.g. p.
213 'Reef found himself' two times in the same paragraph, not to mention all

the 'is alls') especially alongside some awesome passages of comsic
beauty.>>

Well, that Marianne Wiggins article posted earlier today did say ATD was
ruled out of consideration due to there being some last-minute re-writes.
BUt that would suggest the opposite of hurrying up in time to meet the award
deadline, and anyway can you really see Pynchon chasing an NBA?
