What about the "Cheney" homophonically buried in
there?  What does a reader do with that, especially a
reader sitting in post-September 11 USA? Just ignore
it? If it's accidental and Pynchon had nothing to do,
specifically, with such an allusion, it's still there,
and it's not an idiosyncratic reading on my part, I
don't think - others have heard Cheney, too.  

Similar to the earlier reference to "Republicans"  -
obviously, the characters in the novel would be
referring to the Republicans of their day, but for us
present-day readers, it's difficult not to read that
and not think of today's Republicans. I suspect,
although of course don't know for sure, that Pynchon
is playing with this intentionally, using words that
he knows will evoke something else in a very slippery
way.
