First and foremost because it is "artless".....and that ain't Pynchon's
way...

Digressions on the topic of neo-con idiocy are amply covered in other
contexts.

but there are more technical reasons....

the homophonic quality of the word is only apparent in its transliterated
form.....important because Russian is very consistent with respect to
pronunciation.

there is no "u" in cyrillic......

the appromimate analogues are

io

and

y

the first sound like "oo" preceeded by a slight "j glide"

the latter like "ou" as in "Rousseau".....the short "u" sound of "slut"
doesn't exist in a "discreet" letter form...


the letter which, in cyrillic, looks like an upside down "h" actually
contains that "t" sound required to end the word
"slut" AND initiate the beginning "phoneme" of "Cheney"...the sequence of
the e + glide in the VPs name is reversed in "slutchainyi"

I cannot figure out how "slutchainyi" becomes "friends of Cheney" - fans of
Clockwork Orange will recall that the russian word for "friend" is
"droog"...


and therewith I have pretty much exhausted everything I remember about that
yazik.....
