Roth Retiring Zuckerman
by Rachel Deahl
Philip Roth has signed to do his next novel, and the
last featuring his Nathan Zuckerman character, with
his longtime publisher Houghton Mifflin. Exit Ghost,
which is scheduled for an October 2007 release, will
bow 28 years after the publication of Roth's first
Zuckerman novel, Ghost Writer. Zuckerman, an
established Jewish novelist who has been woven through
the fabric of Roth's writing, is considered the
author's literary alter ego. Exit Ghost, which deals
with an aging Zuckerman's fears about losing his edge
as a writer, follows Zuckerman's return to New York
City after years of a reclusive life in rural
Massachusetts. According to Houghton, the book is "a
moving study of obsession, forgetfulness, resignation,
and ungratifiable desire."
