Yes and no.  Both/and ...

But I'd argue, Pynchon'd have to have at least some
idea that line would be read that way, so ...

On the other hand, I'd also argue, intentions,
shmintentions, all we have to work with is "the" text,
and all its inetrtexts, and ... one is NEVER reading
without expectations, reading is the confrontation of
expectations by the text, the text by expectations ...
