Oh, word! The quest narratives of Oedipa, Tyrone, Stencil et al start with
their attempts to counteract/understand/decode/get the drop on whatever
powerful forces have control over their lives. But this inevitably fails or
is unresolved. In Tyrone's case, he just melts away, which may or may not be
a victory. If this force-counterforce jockeying is a game, he moves off the
board. And THAT makes me think of all the extra-dimension talk in AtD thus
far; the Chums of Chance bursting onto the Z axis, the alternate universe
that Lew may have blasted into, the talk of time, etc. Liesl's NYTBR review
closes with the interpretation that Pynchon's "prescription for salvation"
is "flight from reality," which annoyed me when I read it. But perhaps
there's something to it.
