I was warned about the descrepancies and therefore bought the UK edition.
Due to the whole situation with this novel I have developed an iron rule
I've been trying to follow since: to order American books from US and
English ones from UK to avoid such unpleasant 'surprises'. Not to mention
the fact that sometimes the language in different editions is changed: i.e.
British English may be replaced with American English, especially when
talking about slang.
The abundance of nautical terms finally made me find a scheme of a ship and
learn perfunctorily all the terms like waist, wales, yardarms, ratlines,
shrouds, poop deck, quarterdeck, hawser etc. to at least understand all the
movements on the ship. Will come in handy when I reread Moby Dick, and Mason
& Dixon for that matter.
