I just finished five of the six books short listed for the Booker which
will be awarded on october 10th.

One of them is not going to be published in America until next Janurary.

In my opinion, all of them were enjoyable but none of them struck me as
being worthy of winning the prize. The novels in last year's short list
were miles better. Last year I loved "On Beauty" and "Arthur and
George" and thought very highly of "A Long Long Way" and "Never Let Me
Go." Even "The Sea" which won the Booker last year, and which I was not
that crazy about, had more going for it than this year's crop.

And yes, I liked Black Swan Green more than all the books on the short
list.

This year's short list:

Desai, Kiran The Inheritance of Loss
Grenville, Kate The Secret River
Hyland, M.J. Carry Me Down
St Aubyn, Edward Mother's Milk
Waters, Sarah The Night Watch
Matar, Hisham In the Country of Men (to be published here 1/07)
