I guess I did not use the correct word, I think 'intimidated by the language
of M&D' would be more appropriate expression. There is a negative
connotation in 'appalled' that I don't like very much upon second thoughts.
Unfortunately I haven't read Argall, so can't tell, but, interestingly
enough, I had no problems whatsoever with The Sot-Weed Factor that was the
pioneer novel in this field. With Barth it was somehow much easier, there
wasn't a word whose meaning I couldn't find on the Internet. But as for
Pynchon, well, it's a different league altogether. An of course Ackroyd's
Hawksmoor is much much more easier than the above-mentioned.
