Nobody has mentioned Helen DeWitt yet so I will. Her "The Last Samurai"
is a truly remarkable book that shares some of the attributes of a
Pynchon novel: the humor, the fabulous language, the outrageous
characters.
DeWitt was born in America but lived in England for many years. I would
say her writing comes off more American than British. Bekah describes
Zadie Smith as "originally from England." Is she living in America now?
At any rate her writing is as British as can be.
