If you haven't read it, and, especially if you could get the British 
edition, I would recommend Lawrence Norfolk's Lempriere's Dictionary. I'm 
reading it right now. Pretty Pynchonesque, learned and wacky at the same 
time. With occasional descriptions like this: 'An occasional turd bobbed 
malodorously like a miniature monastic tonsure'.
