Yes,  I was on a Lessing kick back in the 70s and read quite a lot. 
I followed her into the 80s and read the Shikasta navels and really 
enjoyed them but they aren't the treasures that The Golden Notebook 
was.   They stuck with me though.   They're allegories and somewhat 
simplistic maybe but highly detailed and well thought out and 
wonderfully well written.
