Pynchon's take on ritual & religion covers all bases and seems to come from an angle similar to Joseph Campbell's with a bit of "Wake" stirred in as well. I suspect this particular thread in his books—taking up the side of the preterite, the "lost"—has more than a bit to do with family history:
