caveat: i haven't read anything by Pamuk.
but this kind of a reaction quote always touches a nerve with me:
BUKET UZUNER, TURKISH NOVELIST AND SHORT-STORY WRITER
"From now maybe (the world) can speak about "Turkish Literature". I
attach great importance to that. We had all hoped Yasar Kemal (veteran
chronicler of rural life in Anatolia) would win the Nobel, everyone
knows this, but I'm also happy for Pamuk to win this prize.
(from Reuters)
it's as if these small countries only have ONE shot at it, even if
they have many writers. And if the shot is political, well...
reminds me of Saramago's prize -- which spoilt the day for Antonio
Lobo Antunes, by far the better writer (IMO), but by far the less
glamorouly political, unlike JS, an unreconstructed and largely
unreflective communist.
