"File this under damned if you do, damned if you don't. For fear of
publicizing a loathsome act, I hesitate to mention the disgraceful little
posting from Radar Online this week, featuring the Facebook.com page of
Thomas Pynchon's 15-year-old son. This pointless move is such a soulless,
pathetic invasion of a boy's privacy that I believe somebody has to say:
Shame on you! Take it down now! Journalists do a lot of unsavory things. I
don't think we have an absolute responsibility to respect Thomas Pynchon's
privacy. If some photographer wants to stake out the recluse's home and snap
a photo, such is the way of the world — and, frankly, I'd be grateful for
the chance to eye the great man's map. But as the Mark Foley scandal reminds
us, children are off-limits. They are not in the game. This basic fact could
not have eluded the editors at Radar — instead, it seems, they just don't
care. Let's hope no one starts posting items about their kids."
