ATD: marketing, ARCs

I think the pynchon-l definitely did play a role. I also suspect that
the son's MySpace entry was first discovered here, and then it got
turned into a larger story elsewhere subsequently. Lurkers or
forwarded, either way.
The Wikipedia entry and the Amazon Customer Discussions played their
part as well, however unwittingly, in generating the on-line buzz which
quite quickly spread further afield into print outlets through the AP
article.
No offence to anyone intended, but it strikes me as naive to assume
that there was no budget set aside for marketing and publicity for AtD,
or that there is no one looking out for the book's or the author's
interests. It was, after all, very much the crowning jewel in Penguin's
Fall Publisher's Catalogue.
