Are you sure it's simply turgid, how about unreadable, overwritten and 
obscene? ;)

I've read 'Babylon'  and was quite entertained by it. Pelevin has read 
Pynchon and was definitely influenced by him. He himself collaborated during 
the translation, so most of the word play should be retained. The book is a 
bit culture specific though, and several pages of annotations would come in 
handy. My all-time favourite is The Clay Machine Gun/Buddha's Little Finger.
