Renowned writer, playwright and journalist Ngugi wa
Thiong'o makes a rare appearance in the Midwest.
Thiong'o, born in Kenya in 1938, has lived through the
Mau Mau War of Independence, the historical episode
that shaped modern Kenya and a major theme in his
early works. His criticism of colonial rule,
Christianity and post-colonial abuses earned him as
much admiration from the public as trouble from
Kenya's authorities. His novels include Weep Not
Child, The River Between and A Grain of Wheat. His
novel, Petals of Blood, a criticism of the corrupt
politics of post-independence Kenya, led to his 1977
arrest and detention....
