A friend and I spent 2 weeks in New York in 1994, Roscoff Hotel just off Times Square, I think it was 43rd St. Anyway we were in our mid-twenties, not generally squeamish, and pretty much constantly drunk, at least during the evenings, yet I still balked when I went for a visit to CBGB's toilets, I've managed to repress most of the details now but they were dirty, dank, fairly dilapidated, and swimming in piss.

Happy memories!
