I also tend to think that the title has something to say about the role of
fiction in general and about Pynchon's new novel in particular. In these
troubled times, fiction remains one of our only shelters against the day,
against the bleak reality surrounding us. It is not an escape from the world
as such (Pynchon has never been one to turn his back on reality) but rather
a safe space/a distorted map of the world which allows us to reflect on this
world and on how we may still change it - or, in Pynchon's own words: "If it
is not the world, it is what the world might be with a minor adjustment or
two. According to some, this is one of the main purposes of fiction."
