Damn! That's a pretty exciting subject. So far, have to confess, I haven't 
read any 18C novel that would discuss these ideas. Maybe only Gulliver's 
Travels, that critises contemporary science, but I don't remember anything 
about magnetism there. (imitating Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction)
