I'd never thought of the oil thing, that's quite clever.

As to the skeleton story:  I'm not sure about its credibility, but it isn't
very far fetched to imagine him writing that way.  Proust was notorious for
writing in several layered drafts that radically changed what he was
saying.  I would imagine it's a fairly standard way of tackling a complex
writing project of that sort.
