What occured to me was the shifting spectra of atomic weights as you move up on Mendeleev's table of elements, moving upwards towards elements with half-lifes well under a nanosecond. There's a very interesting book on the development of the Hydrogen Bomb by John McFee entitled; "Curve of Binding Energy", working in a similar direction.
