It didn't occur to me the last time I read VL, but blue jays are an odd
choice for Northern California, which is outside of their range (see
http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Blue_Jay_dtl.html). A
Steller's Jay, also blue, would make more sense
(http://www.birds.cornell.edu/bow/stejay/). But I have to think that he
meant the blue jays to signify something.
