Tough bird by any name.
The ravens are tougher, smarter, and much bigger, and
have come to dominate many areas of the East Bay, only
the mockingbirds seem to stand up to them.
A typical day here, at our house, could involve
watching a blue jay harrass a smaller bird's nest,
back down from a mockingbird defending its nest,
seeing a hawk cruise in and scare them all, except for
the mockingbirds and ravens and crows, who will drive
the hawks away. I finally stopped putting out birdseed
because things just got too nasty and I couldn't
handle being the cause. I haven't noticed the birds
and squirrels losing any weight, so I guess they're
managing without my help.
