I would like also recommend "The Difference Engine." It's one of my favorite
novels, actually. It's hardly flawless, and I would not call it great
literature, but it's definitely a cracking good read brimming with ideas. I
was always hoping for a sequel....
I am a bit surprised to see "The Anubis gate" mentioned as steampunk. I like
the book a lot, but I wouldn't have called it steampunk. Like all of Power's
books, he's a master at taking real characters and incidents and weaving
them into a fantastic narrative. Highly recommended, especially "The Stress
of Her Regard" and "On Stranger Tides."
Two other steampunk recommendations: Grant Morrison's graphic novel
"Sebastian O," and Mike Mignola's animated show, "The Amazing Screw-on
Head."
There used to be a really fun steampunk role-playing game called "Space
1899." The basic premise was that the Victorians were colonizing Mars....
Airships were, of course, plentiful.
