Lets keep it simple: there's a certain category of Pynchon fan out there
(and on the plist), creeping through the thickets, undetected for years
by innocents such as I, whose politics are simply incompatible with
Pynchon's outright leftist views coming to the surface in Vineland. The
broadly left-leaning political outlook of P is easily found (arguably,
it's obvious) in, say, GR; but these weird creatures can't or won't see
it. See also the Sloth essay, the 1984 intro, etc. So these works get
classified as second or third rate Pynchon, and thus in a sense not
really part of Pyncon's work at all.
Vineland isn't as great as GR, of course not. But calling it a
mediocrity is just plain wrong.
