Dylan vs. Pynchon

It was never really an issue with us while our son was
growing up, he stayed so busy with school and sports
and music that the little bit of time he had left over
for Tube was OK. My life partner likes to keep up
with her PRC propaganda and soap operas, but I don't
have much patience for most of what comes on, I'll
watch a baseball game or a movie now and again, and I
get in my moods when it's the only drug that works,
but I find myself turning it on less and less.

Never tried it, but I've always thought that making a
big deal about banning the Tube from the house, being
perpetually on some anti-Tube mission, could be as
unpleasant as living with people who watch all the
time and don't do much else. (Not everybody who
chooses not to watch TV does that, of course.) So we
have TV, sometimes they're on and somebody's watching,
most of the time they're off. When my son is home
from school, I especially like to hang out with him
and watch the A's when they're on, the kind of
"normal" day that is now anything but, with him away
at school.

Generally I like Pynchon's take on the Tube in
Vineland - a dangerous addicition that also presents
programming that's perhaps funnier and more
interesting to think and talk about than to watch.
