Hard covers and lack thereof

Not everything, actually. Depends on many factors. I've seen an alcoholic in 
dire need for a drink selling collected works of Emil Zola (15 volumes) in 
perfect condition for a couple of pounds at a flea-market.

The thing is that you have to pay for a spine-breaking French paperback the 
same price as for a sturdy American/British hardcover book.
